Standard EN SampleSpecification for Testing Gas Discharge Light Source Subsystem
Also Known As: SAE USCAR27
The SAE USCAR 27:2007 standard is a specification that establishes the test requirements for a Gas Discharge Light Source (GDLS) subsystem used on passenger vehicles. This standard applies to systems that meet the design, performance, and validation requirements set by government standards.
The GDLS subsystem consists of the ballast, igniter, and light source, and is considered as one test sample. Any failure of a component within the test sample constitutes a failure of the entire sample. Only the light source can be replaced during testing. If other components from different manufacturers are intended to be used in the GDLS, those combinations of components must be considered a new GDLS and tested accordingly.
The standard also mentions that additional testing may be required by individual OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) to meet specific objectives related to electromagnetic compatibility, quality, reliability, and durability.
The tests outlined in the standard are to be conducted under various conditions including the use of a new light source or ballast design, design or process changes that may affect the outcome of the test, or the completion of one calendar year as specified in the "ANNUAL TESTS" table in the appendix. In some cases, production process control data collected at shorter intervals may be used as a substitute if approved by the customer's responsible engineer and purchasing representative.
