Hazardous Materials Code
Also Known As:
The NFPA 400-2019 Hazardous Materials Code is a comprehensive standard that provides specialized knowledge and guidelines for the safe storage, handling, and use of hazardous materials. It aims to protect workers, communities, and emergency responders from incidents that can result in loss of life and property damage.
This standard consolidates requirements from previous stand-alone documents and covers a wide range of hazardous materials such as oxidizers, organic peroxides, pesticides, ammonium nitrate, unstable/reactives, water reactives, corrosives, pyrophoric, toxic and highly toxic, and flammable solids.
One significant change in the 2019 edition is the revision of Chapter 11: Ammonium Nitrate, which includes new requirements for fertilizer storage facilities. The revised chapter clarifies the retroactive application of certain sections and specifies the need for molten ammonium nitrate to flow away from storage areas to open, unconfined areas. Fire protection system requirements for ammonium nitrate storage in different building types are also clarified.
Other important changes in the 2019 edition include consolidated maximum allowable quantity (MAQ) tables for various occupancies, a new table extracting common path of travel distance limits, division of Class II organic peroxides into Class IIA and Class IIB, and updates in fire protection system requirements for organic peroxides.
