Hazardous Materials Code
Also Known As:
The NFPA 400-2022 standard, also known as the Hazardous Materials Code, is a comprehensive guide designed to provide specialized knowledge and safety information for facilities or occupancies that store, handle, or use hazardous materials. It aims to protect workers, communities, and emergency responders from potential incidents and hazards associated with these materials.
This standard consolidates and updates the requirements from previous stand-alone documents, including NFPA 430, NFPA 432, NFPA 434, and NFPA 490, which cover specific classes of hazardous materials such as oxidizers, organic peroxides, pesticides, and ammonium nitrate. It also includes requirements for other hazardous materials classified as unstable/reactive, water reactive, corrosive, pyrophoric, toxic, or flammable.
The 2022 edition of NFPA 400 introduces several changes to enhance fire protection. Notable revisions include Chapter 14, which now includes requirements for all organic peroxide quantities, as well as updated definitions for "dosing vessel" and "protected storage room." The section on calcium ammonium nitrate has been revised to exempt compliance with the ammonium nitrate chapter under specific manufacturing specifications, with a corresponding addition of the definition for "calcium ammonium nitrate." Additionally, the maximum allowable quantity values for Class 3 oxidizers in mercantile, storage, and industrial occupancies have been increased, and the terminology for ignitible liquids has been updated to align with NFPA 30, the Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code.
The NFPA 400-2022 standard is an essential resource for various stakeholders, including facility owners/operators, authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs), insurance professionals, and others responsible for ensuring the safe storage, handling, and use of hazardous materials in different types of occupancies. By obtaining this standard, individuals can stay informed about the most up-to-date requirements and safeguards to mitigate the risks associated with hazardous materials.
