Hydrogen Technologies Code
Also Known As:
The NFPA 2-2020 standard, also known as the Hydrogen Technologies Code, addresses the various challenges associated with the safe handling of hydrogen in all types of occupancies. It encompasses provisions for the generation, storage, installation, piping, and use of hydrogen in both compressed gas (GH2) and cryogenic liquid (LH2) forms.
This code is essential for officials responsible for reviewing permits and inspecting occupancies that involve hydrogen, as well as for designers, engineers, installers, contractors, and facility managers involved in applications such as hydrogen storage, laboratory use, vehicle fueling, fuel cell power systems, and combustion processes like electrolytic production of hydrogen.
The 2020 edition of the code includes the most up-to-date requirements for hydrogen safety. It covers a wide range of topics, including industry terminologies, general fire safety practices, deflagration protection, explosion protection, and combustion applications. Additionally, the code provides extensive supportive annex information.
Noteworthy updates in the 2020 edition of NFPA 2 include changes to Chapter 10, GH2 Vehicle Fueling Facilities, addressing fueling protocols, authorized fueling, signage, and vehicle to station communication protocols. There is also a restructuring of Chapter 10 for improved user clarity. Another change is the limitation of Chapter 18, Repair Garage, to LH2 applications only, allowing repair garages to more easily accept hydrogen as an alternative motor fuel while adequately addressing the additional hazards associated with servicing hydrogen vehicles.
