The NFPA 914-2019 standard aims to modernize the fire protection, safety, and security measures in historic locations. The standard emphasizes the importance of meeting present-day standards while preserving the unique characteristics of designated heritage sites. It provides guidance for evaluating existing systems and features of historic buildings, as well as developing and implementing effective plans for ongoing operations, renovations, and restoration projects.
The 2019 edition of NFPA 914 introduces notable changes and enhancements. It revises the title from "Code for Fire Protection of Historic Structures" to "Code for the Protection of Historic Structures" to reflect its expanded scope and purpose, which now includes fire protection, security, resiliency, and preservation. The standard also introduces requirements for fire protection and life safety system commissioning, as well as conditions for integrated system testing.
