Standard for Low-, Medium, and High-Expansion Foam
Also Known As:
NFPA 11-2021 is the industry standard for the design, installation, operation, testing, and maintenance of low-, medium-, and high-expansion foam systems for fire protection. It provides guidelines for fixed, semi-fixed, or portable foam systems that can be used in both interior and exterior fire hazards.
The 2021 edition of NFPA 11 introduces two new chapters. Chapter 6 covers low-expansion foam sprinkler and spray systems, incorporating requirements from NFPA 16. This chapter provides guidance on the installation of foam-water sprinkler and foam-water spray systems. Chapter 13 focuses on inspection, testing, and maintenance (ITM) requirements, offering more comprehensive guidelines for ensuring the integrity and functionality of foam systems.
The updated standard also addresses important developments in the field, such as synthetic fluorine free foam (SFFF) testing and research, rim fire testing of non-metallic floating roof structures, and the latest coverage of all types of foam systems. Furthermore, based on research and testing, new requirements have been added for compressed air foam systems.
