Microbiology of the food chain - Horizontal method for the detection and enumeration of Enterobacteriaceae - Part 1: Detection of Enterobacteriaceae
Also Known As:
ISO 21528-1:2017 is a standard that provides a method for the detection of Enterobacteriaceae in various food and environmental samples. The standard is applicable to products intended for human consumption and animal feed, as well as environmental samples in the primary production, food production, and food handling areas.
The method described in the standard involves enrichment, where the microorganisms being tested for are expected to require resuscitation. It is suitable when the expected number of Enterobacteriaceae is below 100 per milliliter or gram of the test sample.
However, it is important to note that there is a limitation to the applicability of this standard due to the potential for a high degree of variability in the results.
In addition, ISO 21528-1:2017 mentions that enumeration of Enterobacteriaceae can be carried out using the most probable number (MPN) calculation after incubation in a liquid medium, as described in Annex A of the standard.
