Standard EN SampleMicrobiology of the food chain - Horizontal method for the detection, enumeration and serotyping of Salmonella - Part 1: Detection of Salmonella spp
Also Known As:
ISO 6579-1:2017 is a standard that outlines a horizontal method for the detection of Salmonella. It provides guidelines for the detection, enumeration, and serotyping of Salmonella bacteria in various types of samples, including food products intended for human consumption, animal feed, environmental samples from food production and handling areas, and samples from primary production stages such as animal feces and swabs.
The standard aims to detect most Salmonella serovars, but additional culture steps may be required for the detection of certain specific serovars. Annex D of the standard specifically describes the procedure for the detection of Salmonella Typhi and Salmonella Paratyphi.
An important aspect mentioned in the standard is the use of the selective enrichment medium modified semi-solid Rappaport-Vassiliadis (MSRV) agar. This medium is designed to detect motile Salmonella strains, but it may not be suitable for the detection of non-motile Salmonella strains.
