Standard EN SampleStandard for Safety Batteries for Use in Electric Vehicles
Also Known As:
The CAN ULC-S2580-2013 standard, along with its amendments until 2016, specifically addresses the safety requirements for batteries used in electric vehicles. These requirements apply to energy storage assemblies, including battery packs and combination battery pack-electrochemical capacitor assemblies, as well as their subassembly/modules.
The purpose of this standard is to assess the ability of the electrical energy storage assemblies to withstand simulated abuse conditions, ensuring the safety of individuals and preventing any exposure to hazards resulting from such abuse. The evaluation process involves testing the assemblies based on the manufacturer's specified charge and discharge parameters at specified temperatures. However, it does not cover the assessment of how the assembly interacts with other control systems within the vehicle.
It is important to note that this standard does not evaluate the performance or reliability of these energy storage devices. Additionally, it excludes the evaluation requirements for batteries used in light electric vehicles such as electric assist bicycles, wheelchairs, electric scooters, and similar devices, which are covered by the UL/ULC 2271 standard.
