The standard covers a wide range of areas related to safety, including fire protection, electrical safety, personal safety, and explosion risks associated with cannabis cultivation and related activities. It provides minimum requirements for devices, equipment, and systems used in these activities, aiming to mitigate the risks of fire, electric shock, injury, and explosions.

Additionally, the standard includes provisions for the security of premises, addressing intrusion and infiltration. It also considers secure access and safe egress requirements. However, it should be noted that the standard does not cover general fire prevention or building construction features, as those are typically regulated by building and fire codes.

The standard excludes certain areas from its scope. It does not address the use of cannabis or cannabis products, premises used exclusively for operational activities like office spaces or retail outlets (except as defined in Clause 1.5), transportation of cannabis products, occupational health and safety requirements for cannabis workers (except as specified in Clauses 10.2 and 17.2), security of the supply chain monitoring system, and outdoor grow areas (including cannabis and industrial hemp).

Lastly, the standard clarifies that residential occupancies allowed under Canadian laws to grow a maximum of four cannabis plants for personal or recreational purposes are not covered by this standard. When buildings or premises combine cultivation and processing of cannabis plants with other operational activities, the requirements of this standard are applied to the relevant portions of the facility as determined by Clauses 1.1 and 1.2.
