CAN ULC-S531-14 (R2018) is a standard that covers the requirements for electrically operated single and multiple station smoke alarms. These smoke alarms are intended for open area protection in indoor locations and must comply with the Installation of Smoke Alarms, CAN/ULC-S553, as well as the National Building Code of Canada and the National Fire Code of Canada. The standard evaluates different types of single station smoke alarms, such as ionization-type, photoelectric-type, smoke alarm with supplementary heat detection type, combination smoke type, and multi-criteria type. These smoke alarms consist of an assembly of electrical components including a smoke sensor/chamber, alarm sounding appliance, and provision for connection to a power supply source. They are designed to detect one or more products of combustion, including visible and invisible smoke particles, gases, heat, radiant energy, and water vapor. The standard also allows for additional functionality, such as a supplemental heat detector, terminals for connection to a remote audible signaling appliance, or an integral transmitter.

It is important to note that this standard does not cover smoke detectors of non-self-contained type meant for connection to a household or industrial control unit, mechanically operated heat alarms specified in ULC-ORD-C539, heat detectors (except for the requirements in the Fire Test smoke alarm with heat detection), accessories with means to transmit alarm signals to a remote monitoring location, gas and vapor detectors or sensors incorporated within smoke alarm assemblies (covered by CSA 6.19-01), and particular requirements for interconnected or remote accessories. These excluded items have their specific standards.
