The CAN ULC-S590-2019 standard covers the principles and requirements for the creation and implementation of a safety way guidance system (SWGS). The standard applies to both electrically powered and photoluminescent components and provides guidance for the design, installation, inspection, testing, and maintenance of SWGS.

The standard recognizes that SWGS may have additional features or functions that enhance the life safety of building occupants. However, it does not provide guidance for egress safety evaluations, as different applications with varying risks require different layouts and types of SWGS. Qualified persons are responsible for reviewing and approving SWGS installations.

The standard does not include guidance for tactile or audible components of SWGS, nor does it encompass the design and application of high-mounted emergency egress or means of egress lighting. Installation of components not covered by the standard should follow good engineering practice and manufacturer's instructions.
