Standard EN SampleStandard for Bare and Covered Ferrules
Also Known As:
The UL 486F:2021 standard provides requirements for bare and covered ferrules used for both field wiring and factory wiring. These ferrules are designed to facilitate the connection of stranded wires onto devices like terminal blocks. Their main purpose is to prevent turned back strands during installation and ensure a secure and reliable connection.
The standard specifies that when used with one conductor, the ferrules are suitable for stranded copper conductors ranging from 1/0 to 26 AWG, or 50 to 0.14 mm². When used with two conductors, they can accommodate (2) 6 to (2) 26 AWG, or (2) 16 to (2) 0.25 mm², stranded copper conductors.
It is important to note that these ferrules are intended to be terminated in wire connection devices rated for solid conductors. They are not suitable for use in IDC (insulation displacement connection) terminal blocks. Additionally, the standard clarifies that it does not apply to wire connectors such as pin adapters covered in CSA C22.2 No. 65 or UL 486A-486B.
In Canada, the general requirements for this standard are provided in CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 0.
