Explosive Atmospheres - Part 7: Equipment protection by increased safety 'e'
Also Known As:
The UL 60079-7:2021 standard specifies the requirements for the design, construction, testing, and marking of electrical equipment and Ex Components with the type of protection increased safety "e." This standard applies to equipment intended for use in explosive gas atmospheres.
The equipment and Ex Components with increased safety "e" can have two levels of protection. Level of Protection "eb" (EPL "Mb" or "Gb") applies to equipment with connections, conductors, windings, lamps, and batteries, excluding semiconductors or electrolytic capacitors. The use of electronic components in Level of Protection "eb" is excluded due to the potential risks of excessive temperatures or arcs and sparks if internal separation distances are not maintained.
Level of Protection "ec" applies to equipment that includes connections, conductors, windings, lamps, batteries, and allows for the use of semiconductors and electrolytic capacitors. Electronic components in Level of Protection "ec" are evaluated under normal and regular expected conditions and are not likely to result in excessive temperatures or arcs and sparks. The requirements of this standard apply to both levels of protection unless otherwise specified.
The standard also provides specific voltage limits for equipment with increased safety "e." For Level of Protection "eb," the standard applies to electrical equipment with a rated voltage not exceeding 11 kV AC or DC. For Level of Protection "ec," the standard applies to electrical equipment with a rated voltage not exceeding 15 kV AC or DC.
The UL 60079-7:2021 standard supplements and modifies the general requirements of IEC 60079-0 (or UL 60079-0). In case of conflicts between the requirements of this standard and IEC 60079-0 (or UL 60079-0), the requirements of UL 60079-7:2021 take precedence.
When referencing other IEC 60079 standards, the requirements found in those standards apply as modified by any applicable U.S. National Differences. This ensures that the referenced requirements align with the specific requirements and regulations in the United States.
