Visible Signaling Devices for Fire Alarm and Signaling Systems, Including Accessories
Also Known As:
UL 1638:2017 is a standard that applies to visible signaling devices used in fire alarm and signaling systems. It provides guidelines for the installation and usage of these devices, both in Canada and the United States, ensuring their compliance with the respective electrical codes and safety standards.
The standard covers a range of visible signal devices, including flashing devices for fire alarms or emergency signaling, emergency warning devices, and informative visual signaling devices connected to fire alarm or emergency signaling system equipment. It also includes protective covers and accessories used with visible signals.
However, the standard does not apply to visual signaling devices that are not intended for emergency signaling applications or those intended for operation on Class 2 signal circuits. For use in hazardous or corrosive locations, additional requirements from the applicable electrical codes must be met.
Additionally, when a visible signaling device incorporates a supplementary audible signal specifically for fire alarm applications, it must meet the requirements of UL 1638 as well as the applicable audible signaling device standards. These standards vary between Canada and the United States and cover audible signaling devices and speakers for fire alarm and signaling systems.
