Standard ENLow Speed Thorax Impact Test Procedure for the HIII5F Dummy
Also Known As: SAE J2878_202206
The SAE J 2878:2022 standard provides a recommended practice for conducting a Low Speed Thorax Impact Test on the Hybrid III Small Female Anthropomorphic Test Device (ATD), also known as a crash dummy. The purpose of this test is to meet the industry's requirement for a certification test that produces peak chest deflection comparable to the levels observed in current full vehicle, frontal impact tests. The existing certification procedure for the thorax impact test has resulted in higher peak chest deflection values compared to those typically seen in full vehicle tests.
The goal of this standard is to establish a low speed thorax certification procedure specifically for the H-III5F dummy, involving an impact speed of 3.0 m/s. This is similar to the SAE J2779 procedure for the H-III50M dummy. By developing this procedure, the standard aims to address the limitations of the current certification method and ensure that the thorax impact test reflects real-world frontal impact scenarios more accurately. The implementation of this standard will help enhance the overall safety evaluation process of vehicle occupant protection systems.
