Health Care Facilities Code
Also Known As:
The 2018 edition of NFPA 99: Health Care Facilities Code aims to provide more usable, enforceable, and adoptable performance criteria for health care facilities. This code follows a risk-based approach, where safety guidelines are defined based on the risk posed to patients and staff, rather than the type of building. The code covers various aspects of health care facilities including installation, inspection, testing, maintenance, performance, and safe practices for facilities, materials, equipment, and appliances.
Some major changes have been made in the 2018 edition to broaden the code's scope and improve efficiency in ensuring health care safety. These changes include revised requirements for risk assessments, allowing for the use of oxygen concentrators as central supply sources for piped medical gas systems, permitting corrugated medical tubing for medical gas and vacuum systems, reorganizing Chapter 6 to group related requirements, introducing requirements for wireless phone and paging integration, creating a dedicated chapter for dental gas and vacuum piping systems, and including requirements for fire extinguisher selection in spaces unique to health care facilities.
