Standard for Fire Doors and Other Opening Protectives
Also Known As:
NFPA 80-2019 is a comprehensive standard that provides requirements for safeguarding openings in rated walls, floors, and ceilings against the spread of fire and smoke. It is a crucial standard for ensuring occupant life safety and property protection in the event of a fire.
The standard is widely referenced by various codes and regulations, including NFPA 101, model building codes, and fire codes both nationally and internationally. It emphasizes the proper installation, inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire door assemblies, fire window assemblies, fire dampers, fabric fire safety curtains, and fire protective curtain assemblies.
The 2019 edition of NFPA 80 introduces several updates and revisions. It includes new definitions for inspection marks and field labels to assist in the application of inspection, testing, and maintenance provisions. Additionally, there are updated provisions in Chapter 4 that address job site preparation of fire doors for fire pins, as well as provisions for measuring clearance under the bottom of fire doors and addressing bottom clearance with the presence of latching hardware devices.
Chapter 5 is expanded to cover fire protective curtain assemblies, with a new section addressing inspection marks. Chapter 19 includes the latest requirements for the inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire and combination fire/smoke dampers, including a remote inspection method. Furthermore, there are clarifications on the inspection requirements for single inaccessible dampers, and new and revised figures for typical steel door frame installations in Annex A.
