The NFPA 88A-2019 standard is an important reference document for builders, designers, owners, and facility managers involved in parking structure safety and compliance with codes. This edition of the standard has been updated to align with the Life Safety Code and the National Electrical Code, among others.

The standard focuses on providing the latest requirements for the construction and protection of both open and enclosed parking structures, as well as the control of hazards within these structures. It does not cover garages that are part of one- and two-family dwellings.

NFPA 88A includes provisions that address various aspects, such as means of egress, construction, building services and fire protection, special hazard protection, and special structures. The latter includes definitions and requirements specifically applicable to "Automated Mechanical Type Parking Structures."

The 2019 edition of the standard features changes such as updated references, a new definition for "autodrive vehicle," and other clarifications.
