Standard EN SampleStandard for Wildland Fire Management
Also Known As:
The NFPA 1143-2018 standard provides guidelines and requirements for fire service agencies in effectively managing wildland fires to reduce fire loss and devastation. With the increasing threats posed by wildland fire incidents in North America, this standard aims to assist fire departments and state/federal land management agencies in preventing, mitigating, preparing for, and suppressing fires in wildland and wildland urban interface areas.
The standard emphasizes the importance of developing a written risk and hazard assessment plan and mitigation plan. It also emphasizes the need for fire response plans, preparedness measures, financial considerations, personnel safety, and training of personnel. A key aspect of the standard is the identification of management practices to be followed during wildland fire incidents, as well as the recommended post-incident activities.
The 2018 edition of NFPA 1143 introduces several updates and revisions. This includes revised terminology to better align with the standard's intent, changes to training and qualifications to align with other relevant standards, revisions to incident management chapters to align with the National Incident Management System (NIMS), and clarified and updated terminology in fire suppression subsections.
Local government and volunteer fire departments are encouraged to adopt this edition of NFPA 1143. By doing so, they can develop approaches consistent with current NFPA standards on emergency services incident management and disaster management programs, and stay updated on firefighter safety practices.
