Standard for the Installation of Electronic Premises Security Systems
Also Known As:
NFPA 731-2020 is a standard that provides guidelines for the installation of electronic premises security systems. It is designed to ensure that buildings and facilities are adequately protected from intrusion by complying with consensus-based requirements for electronic and mechanical security systems and their components. The standard covers all aspects of premises security systems, including application, location, installation, performance, testing, and maintenance.
The 2020 edition of NFPA 731 has undergone extensive updates to account for the rapidly evolving security system industry knowledge and best practices. Some of the changes include aligning definitions between NFPA 731 and NFPA 730 (Guide for Premises Security), revising chapter 3 definitions for consistency, deletion of certain unused definitions, review of SI/metric conversions for accuracy, removal of the word 'electronic' from the title to reflect that the standard applies to both electronic and mechanical means of protection, addition of requirements for maintenance and prioritization of repairs, and new criteria for Power over Ethernet (PoE) equipment and operation.
NFPA 731 is a valuable resource for security personnel, installers, owners, service technicians, and anyone involved in protecting premises from unauthorized access.
