Also Known As:
The NFPA 252-2017 standard provides testing provisions to evaluate the ability of fire doors to resist the passage of flame, heat, and gases. This updated edition offers more guidance and outlines the methods of fire testing door assemblies. It allows testing laboratories and manufacturers to determine the suitability of assembly when fire resistance of a specific duration is required.
The NFPA 252 standard enables the comparison of different fire door assemblies to assess their relative performance against a standard fire experience. It is also the required test for the application of NFPA 80, which is now a mandated requirement due to the adoption of the 2012 edition of NFPA 101 by the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
The standard covers various aspects such as control of fire test, conduct of tests, fire test, hose stream test, performance criteria, and general provisions. It includes special sections for swinging doors and sliding doors. The 2017 edition has additional information on calculating pressure gradients and updated references throughout.
All fire door testing laboratories and manufacturers should reference the latest edition of NFPA 252 to ensure that fire doors have the best chance of resisting the passage of flame, heat, and gases.
