The NFPA 1852-2019 standard aims to ensure better respiratory protection for emergency services personnel. This standard provides criteria for the selection, purchase, care, and maintenance of open-circuit SCBA, which is required by the respiratory protection program in NFPA 1500, Fire Department Occupational Safety and Health Program.

The 2019 edition of NFPA 1852 expanded its scope by becoming the selection, care, and maintenance standard for both NFPA 1986 and NFPA 1981. The standard now includes references to NFPA 1986, which deals with respiratory protection equipment for tactical and technical operations.

One of the major additions in this edition is the requirement for reporting adverse conditions involving SCBA, such as removing them from service, securing them, restricting access, and documenting the chain of custody. This requirement helps organizations comply with NFPA 1986, which mandates data logging and evidence submission to SCBA manufacturers in case of adverse conditions.

The standard also includes a new chain of custody form, clarifications on when SCBAs must be upgraded or retired, and updates to references of other NFPA documents, qualifications for SCBA technicians, and program quality assurance.
