Since then, the standard has undergone several revisions and updates to ensure that personnel are adequately prepared for different types of fire investigations. The 2022 edition of NFPA 1033 reflects changes that align it more closely with NFPA 921, "Guide for Fire and Explosion Investigations," as it is common practice for fire investigators to use both standards. The updates also aim to improve the clarity and ease of use of the requirements.

The standard covers various aspects of fire investigation, including scene examination, documentation, evidence collection and preservation, interviewing techniques, post-incident investigation, and presentation of findings. Given the potential legal and economic consequences of fire investigations, it is crucial for investigators to be fully qualified and competent in evaluating situations and conducting thorough and accurate investigations.
