The NFPA 1911-2017 standard provides guidelines for the proper care and management of emergency vehicles. The standard emphasizes the importance of conducting regular inspection, maintenance, and in-service testing to ensure the vehicles' performance and reliability during emergency situations.
This updated edition of NFPA 1911 has a broader scope, as it now applies to various types of emergency vehicles, not just fire apparatus. It includes a new chapter focusing on the patient compartment of ambulances, which should be used alongside NFPA 1917, the standard for automotive ambulances. Additionally, the 2017 edition introduces requirements for trailers and aligns with other relevant NFPA standards, such as NFPA 1901 for automotive fire apparatus and NFPA 1906 for wildland fire apparatus.
There are some specific changes and additions in the standard, including new requirements for ultra-high-pressure pumps (UHPs) and clarification that the standards can apply to vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) less than 5001 lb if the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) chooses to do so. The chapter addressing daily/weekly checks has been revised to ensure consistency with codes and standards and to address current accepted practices. Moreover, the standard now includes requirements for annual testing of wildland fire pumps and UHPs, as well as when any listed repair is performed.
