Code for Safety to Life from Fire on Merchant Vessels
Also Known As:
The NFPA 301-2018 standard is designed to ensure the safety of individuals on merchant vessels during fire emergencies. This standard was created in response to a request from the United States Coast Guard and provides minimum requirements for the design, operation, and maintenance of merchant vessels.
In the 2018 edition, there are several important updates that are crucial for naval architects, vessel owners, and enforcers to be aware of. These updates include revised requirements for backup lighting to reduce blackout time in spaces without natural lighting, the need for approved signage on doors, passageways, ladders, or stairways that are not exits or exit access ways, and references to provisions in NFPA 90A relating to insulation and coverings for pipes and ducts in areas with high temperatures.
Furthermore, the 2018 edition of NFPA 301 also includes changes relating to fire test requirements for draperies and other vertically hung textiles, as well as classification requirements for portable fire extinguishers based on NFPA 10 or the Code of Federal Regulations.
It is essential for those involved in the maritime industry to stay updated with the NFPA 301-2018 standard to ensure the safety of individuals on board merchant vessels during fire emergencies.
