Standard EN SampleStandard on Incinerators and Waste and Linen Handling Systems and Equipment
Also Known As:
The NFPA 82-2019 standard is a crucial guideline for minimizing fire risks associated with incinerators and waste handling systems. This standard applies to various stakeholders such as facility owners, managers, waste or linen chute manufacturers, designers, insurers, and authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ).
NFPA 82 provides explicit instructions for the fire-safe installation and use of waste storage rooms, containers, incinerators, compactors, and waste, linen, and laundry handling systems. The recent updates to the standard aim to enhance clarity, reflect the practical application of equipment in the field, and align it with the latest referenced documents.
Some notable changes in the standard include the addition of definitions for combustible material, noncombustible material, and spark arrester. These definitions are consistent with NFPA 211, which pertains to chimneys, fireplaces, vents, and solid fuel-burning appliances. Chapter 5 has also undergone revisions that primarily focus on spark arresters as a preventive measure for containing sparks and fly ash within chimneys.
Furthermore, the requirement for gaskets on chute doors in Chapter 6 has been eliminated to ensure proper seating and alignment with their listing. The updated references now reflect the current editions of various NFPA standards such as NFPA 13, NFPA 54, NFPA 58, NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code), and NFPA 80, among others.
The accompanying Annex A of NFPA 82-2019 provides detailed graphics illustrating different types of chutes, a comprehensive pneumatic system, alternatives for fire dampers, and more. This edition of the standard is available in a printable format, spanning 33 pages.
