Standard for Wildland Fire Apparatus
Also Known As:
NFPA 1906 is the standard for wildland fire apparatus, providing guidelines for manufacturers, fire chiefs, purchasing authorities, and fleet managers. It covers the requirements for new automotive wildland fire apparatus, including those equipped with slip-on fire fighting modules. The standard includes chapters on chassis and vehicle components, electrical systems and warning devices, driving and crew areas, body, compartments, and equipment mounting, pumps for wildland fire fighting, associated equipment, and water tanks.
The 2016 edition of NFPA 1906 introduced several important updates to improve personnel safety and incorporate new technologies. It includes a new chapter on the design of wildland fire crew carriers, focused on enhancing firefighter safety. Another new chapter is dedicated to Ultra-High Pressure (UHP) fire pumps and associated equipment, reflecting the increased use of this technology. This edition also provides guidance for the design, testing, and performance of UHP fire pumps.
Additionally, the 2016 edition includes added requirements for the design of the On-Board Pump-and-Roll Firefighting Position, which is a seated, protected position that allows for safe and effective pump-and-roll operations in situations where walk along-side operations are not practical. The standard emphasizes the importance of constructing new wildland fire apparatus in compliance with the latest edition of NFPA 1906, especially for those intended for use on federal lands, to ensure the safe transport of firefighting personnel and the operation of associated equipment.
