Standard on Operations and Training for Technical Search and Rescue Incidents
Also Known As:
The NFPA 1670-2017 standard, also known as the Standard on Operations and Training for Technical Search and Rescue Incidents, aims to enhance the safety of emergency personnel involved in technical search and rescue incidents. This standard has been significantly restructured and updated to address the latest requirements.
NFPA 1670 sets forth guidelines for conducting operations safely and effectively while minimizing risks to rescuers. It is essential for professionals in organizations providing technical search and rescue at various levels, including awareness, operations, and technician. The standard covers a wide range of incidents, such as rope rescue, structural collapse, confined space entry, floodwater, urban search and rescue, mines, tunnels, and more.
The fundamental aspects of technical rescue covered in this standard include hazard identification and risk assessments, incident response planning, and determining the level of functional capability required for a rescue organization.
The 2017 edition of NFPA 1670 is revised to align with NFPA 1006: Standard for Technical Rescuer Personnel Professional Qualifications. A joint task group has worked to correlate the material in both standards, ensuring consensus and utilizing the same definitions. Chapters have also been added for Floodwater and Watercraft to address specific water-related rescue challenges.
