SKU118978741 Published by National Fire Protection Association NFPA Publication Date2018 Pages CountPages81

The NFPA 1981-2019 standard sets the necessary requirements for SCBA used by emergency services personnel. It aims to provide respiratory protection and functionality for first responders in various emergency situations such as fire fighting, rescue operations, hazardous material incidents, and terrorist incidents. The standard addresses scenarios where responders may encounter confined spaces, unknown atmospheres, atmospheres that are immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH), and oxygen-deficient atmospheres.

The 2019 edition of the standard includes several updates and additions. These include the definition of universal emergency breathing safety systems (UEBSS) and corresponding updates to the test series table. It also introduces a new requirement for pressure demand certification by NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) and a minimum non-electronic transmission system for voice communication. The use of data logging software to report breathing rate is now allowed, and there are updated requirements and figures for EBSS (Emergency Breathing Safety Systems) male and female fittings. Additionally, there is a new strength of connection requirement between the facepiece and second stage regulator, along with an associated test.

It is crucial for jurisdictions and organizations to stay up to date with the latest edition of NFPA 1981, as it ensures the safety of personnel working in confined spaces or encountering atmospheres that could pose a threat to their health and well-being.
