Standard EN SampleStandard for the Prevention of Fires and Dust Explosions in Agricultural and Food Processing Facilities
Also Known As:
The NFPA 61-2020 standard is a comprehensive guide that aims to prevent fire and explosion hazards caused by dust in agricultural and food processing facilities. Dust control is a critical concern in these facilities, and this standard provides guidelines and requirements for implementing effective measures to reduce the risks associated with dust-related incidents.
The standard covers a range of areas, including facility construction, ventilation, heat transfer operations, dust control measures, equipment design and installation, explosion prevention and protection, pneumatic conveying, and building fire prevention. It is designed to help safeguard lives, property, and commodities in various facilities such as bulk agricultural processing facilities, animal feed production facilities, starch manufacturing facilities, bakeries, cereal manufacturing facilities, snack food production, and candy manufacturing.
The 2020 edition of NFPA 61 introduces several significant revisions, aligning its organization with NFPA 652, updating the deadline for completing a dust hazard analysis (DHA) to January 1, 2022, revising surface resistivity requirements, including new sections on spray dryer systems, mixers and blenders, and ignition sources, providing guidelines for the management of change, and expanding the table on agricultural dust test data. The standard also includes annex material that offers additional information on completing a DHA, determining filtering efficiency of dust collectors, and providing protection methods for bins, silos, and tunnels.
