Standard EN SampleCode for Motor Fuel Dispensing Facilities and Repair Garages
Also Known As:
NFPA 30A-2021 is a standard that addresses the safety requirements for storing and dispensing motor vehicle fuel. The standard aims to mitigate the risks associated with working with flammable and combustible liquids and gases by providing safety criteria for fuel dispensing operations in motor vehicle and marine craft fuel tanks, as well as in repair garages.
The code covers both liquid and gaseous fuels dispensed at the same location and includes provisions for on-demand mobile fueling applications. The 2021 edition of NFPA 30A includes extensive revisions that reflect the latest industry developments and technology in fuel storage and related equipment, such as piping and dispensing systems.
Some of the major changes in the 2021 edition include revised requirements for repair garages and areas where compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) vehicles are serviced. These revisions cover areas such as building construction, electrical area classification, repair area classification for CNG and LNG vehicles, flammable gas detection, and purge ventilation. Additionally, new requirements for on-demand mobile fueling on public streets and revised fire extinguisher requirements aligned with NFPA 10, "Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers," are also included.
NFPA 30A-2021 is essential for facility owners, operators, architects, engineers, AHJs (Authorities Having Jurisdiction), and inspectors involved in the design, construction, and operation of motor fuel dispensing facilities.
