Clothing for Protection Against Heat and Flame - Determination of Heat Transmission on Exposure to Both Flame and Radiant Heat

JIS T 8024:2020 is a standard that specifies a test method for determining the heat transmission of flame-resistant textile materials when exposed to a combination of convective and radiant heat. The test conditions involve a 50/50 mixture of convective and radiant heat, with a total exposure heat flux of 84 kW/m². This test method applies to sheet materials, whether used as single layers or in multilayer constructions, as long as all structures or sub-assemblies are made of flame-resistant materials.

It is important to note that this standard does not apply to materials that are not flame resistant, and it does not evaluate materials exposed to other thermal energy sources such as radiant heat only or flame contact only. For evaluating materials exposed to radiant heat only, JIS T 8020 is applicable, while JIS T 8021 is applicable for evaluating materials due to flame contact only.

The standard acknowledges that some textile materials may ignite and continue to burn after being exposed to the convective and radiant heat produced in this test method. Therefore, the purpose of this standard is to measure and describe the properties of materials, products, or assemblies under controlled laboratory conditions, rather than to determine their fire hazard or risk under actual fire conditions.

It is worth noting that the results of this test method can be used as part of a fire-risk assessment, considering all relevant factors specific to the intended use of the materials, products, or assemblies. However, it is emphasized that this test method may not correlate with the heat-insulative performance of vertically oriented flame-resistant textile materials when exposed to a combination of convective and radiant heat or used in actual clothing configurations.

The standard also provides information on the corresponding international standard, ISO 17492:2019, which shares the same content and has a degree of correspondence indicated as MOD (modified). The symbols of degree of correspondence used in this standard are IDT (identical), MOD (modified), and NEQ (not equivalent), in accordance with ISO/IEC Guide 21-1.
