Standard EN SampleAcoustics - Estimation of noise-induced hearing loss
Also Known As:
ISO 1999:2013 is a standard that provides a method for estimating the potential hearing loss caused by noise exposure. It outlines a calculation method for determining the expected permanent threshold shift in a population's hearing threshold levels due to different levels and durations of noise exposure. The standard also provides guidelines for calculating hearing disability based on the measured audiometric frequencies.
The standard uses the noise exposure level normalized to an 8-hour working day, known as LEX,8h, as a measure of exposure to noise for a population at risk. It takes into account the number of years of exposure to noise. ISO 1999:2013 focuses on steady, intermittent, fluctuating, and irregular noise at frequencies below approximately 10 kHz.
It is important to note that ISO 1999:2013 is not applicable to sound pressures exceeding 200 Pa (140 dB relative to 20 µPa), and using the standard for higher sound pressure levels would require extrapolation.
