Eye and Face Protection - Sunglasses and Related Eyewear - Part 1: Sunglasses for General Use
Also Known As:
The ISO 12312-1:2022 standard focuses on general use sunglasses and related eyewear for the protection against solar radiation. It applies to plano power sunglasses and clip-ons used in various settings, including on the road and while driving. Annex A provides information on the use of sunglass filters, while Annex C outlines the requirements for unmounted filters used as replacement or alternative filters.
However, there are certain eyewear products that fall outside the scope of this standard. It does not apply to eyewear designed for protection against radiation from artificial light sources. Sports-specific eye protectors, such as ski goggles, are excluded and covered by ISO 18527. Sunglasses prescribed for medical purposes are also not covered. Additionally, products intended for direct observation of the sun, such as during a solar eclipse, are subject to ISO 12312-2. Occupational eye protection is addressed separately in standards like ISO 16321.
