Safety of machinery - Safety distances to prevent hazard zones being reached by upper and lower limbs
Also Known As:
ISO 13857:2019 is a standard that establishes safety distances to prevent the reaching of hazard zones by upper and lower limbs in machinery. It provides values for these safety distances in both industrial and non-industrial environments, specifically for protective structures.
The standard applies to individuals who are 14 years and older, with the intention of covering the 95th percentile of the population. For upper limbs, it also provides information for children older than 3 years, addressing the issue of reaching through openings. However, data for preventing lower limb access for children is not considered.
It is important to note that while compliance with the standard's requirements can prevent access to the hazard zone, it does not provide the necessary risk reduction for all hazards such as machine emissions, heat sources, noise, and dust. The safety distances specified in the standard are intended to protect individuals who are attempting to reach hazard zones under the specified conditions.
Additionally, it is important to mention that this standard does not provide measures against reaching hazard zones by climbing over, as this is covered by ISO 14120:2015.
