Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code)
Also Known As:
The IEC 60529:1989+A1:1999+A2:2013 standard provides a classification system for the degrees of protection provided by enclosures of electrical equipment. It applies to equipment with a rated voltage not exceeding 72.5 kV. This standard includes the content of various corrigenda issued in 2003, 2007, 2009, 2013, 2015, and 2019.
The purpose of this standard is to define and classify the levels of protection provided by enclosures against the ingress of solids and liquids. It establishes different IP codes (Ingress Protection codes) that indicate the degree of protection offered by the enclosures.
The IP code consists of two digits. The first digit represents the protection against the ingress of solid objects, such as dust, while the second digit represents the protection against the ingress of liquids, such as water. The digits are assigned based on specific test conditions and requirements outlined in the standard.
This consolidated version of the standard covers the second edition (1989), its amendment 1 (1999), and its amendment 2 (2013). It eliminates the need to order additional amendments separately.
