CSA Z1008.1 is an implementation guideline for the CSA Z1008 standard, focusing on the management of impairment in the workplace, specifically impairment due to substance use. The objective of this guideline is to provide organizations of all sizes with guidance on how to effectively apply the CSA Z1008 standard.

This guideline was developed by the CSA Group with funding support from Health Canada and the Canadian Association of Administrators of Labour Law - Occupational Safety and Health (CAALL-OSH), along with provincial and territorial governments and the Government of Canada. The views expressed in the guideline do not necessarily represent the views of Health Canada. The Technical Committee on Management of Impairment in the Workplace, under the jurisdiction of the Strategic Steering Committee on Occupational Health and Safety, has prepared and approved this guideline.

The scope of CSA Z1008.1 includes various aspects of impairment management in the workplace, such as developing a policy, management commitment and leadership, worker participation and consultation, communication and training, hazard identification, risk assessment and control, stay at work/return to work, accommodation, compliance to the policy and program, and monitoring, evaluation, and continual improvement.

It is important to note that CSA Z1008.1 does not specifically address workplace disability management systems, workplace fatigue management, prevention programs for other environmental hazards, diagnosing substance use disorder, specific workplace substance testing procedures, human rights legislation, OHS legal requirements, and all aspects of mental health.
