The CSA 6.19-17 standard is applicable to carbon monoxide (CO) alarming devices used in residential settings. The scope of the standard includes living spaces such as dwelling units, recreational vehicles, mobile homes, unconditioned areas (such as cottages and attached garages), and facilities with detention, treatment, and care occupancy. The standard does not apply to spaces intended for industrial or commercial applications.

This edition of the standard introduces several significant changes. These changes include the inclusion of devices that display low levels of CO (< 30 ppm), with the acknowledgment that these devices are not intended to provide an alarm signal during long-term, low-level CO exposures. Definitions have been modified and added, addressing terms such as sensor, trouble signal, CO alarm with low-level CO indication, care occupancy, end-of-life signal, and more.

Additionally, requirements related to replacement date, warning signal, quantity indicator, secondary power supply, and end-of-life signal have been revised or added. Marking requirements for AC-operated plug-in devices and devices with low-level CO indication have been updated. The standard also includes additional instructions for devices with low-level CO indication and clarifies the location of devices. Testing methodologies, stability testing requirements, and reliability testing and measurement have been expanded and updated as well.

It is important to note that this standard specifically applies to devices intended to protect against acute effects of CO exposure and are not designed to provide an alarm signal during long-term, low-level CO exposures or slightly higher short-term transient CO exposure. The standard does not cover smoke alarms, smoke detectors, heat detectors, or gas/vapour detectors and sensors. Furthermore, it does not apply to industrial and commercial applications. Remote accessories that can be connected to or used with a single- or multiple-station CO alarm are also covered by this standard.
