CSA B625:20 is the third edition of the standard for portable tanks used for the transport of dangerous goods. This standard applies to the design, manufacture, and approval of UN portable tanks with a capacity greater than 450 L. It is important to note that these tanks may or may not meet the definition of a container according to the International Maritime Organization's International Convention for Safe Containers.

In addition to this standard, the applicable provisions of the International Convention for Safe Containers also apply to portable tanks that meet its definition of a container. However, the Convention does not apply to offshore tank containers that are handled in open seas. For offshore tank containers, the design, testing, and provisions are determined by the approving competent authority and take into account the dynamic forces and adverse weather conditions of open seas.

CSA B625:20 also covers the selection, use, inspection, testing, and repair of UN portable tanks, as well as various other types of portable tanks specified by the International Maritime Organization. These regulations ensure the safe handling, offering for transport, and transport of dangerous goods in Canada.

It is important to note that the occupational health and safety aspects associated with using this standard are not addressed. Users of this standard have the responsibility to consult the appropriate authorities and establish appropriate health and safety practices in compliance with regulatory requirements.

Lastly, it is emphasized that while this standard sets out minimum requirements for portable tank design and construction, competent judgment should be exercised to ensure adequate public safety. In certain circumstances, it may be necessary to exceed the minimum requirements in order to achieve sufficient levels of safety.
