Management of Impairment in the Workplace
Also Known As:
The CSA Z1008:21 standard provides guidelines and requirements for organizations to effectively manage impairment in the workplace. The standard focuses on impairment due to substance use but also aligns with the principles and best practices specified in other publications under CSA Group's Z1000 suite of standards.
The standard covers various aspects of impairment management, including the development of a policy, management commitment and leadership, key roles and responsibilities, worker participation and consultation, communication, education, and training. It also includes requirements for initial review and needs assessment, hazard identification, risk assessment and control, reviewing control measures, stay at work/return to work programs, accommodation, compliance to the policy and related program, and monitoring, evaluation, and continuous improvement.
It is important to note that the standard does not specifically address workplace disability management systems, workplace fatigue management, prevention programs for environmental hazards, substance use disorder diagnosis, specific substance testing procedures, human rights legislation, OHS legal requirements, or all aspects of mental health. These areas are outside the scope of the standard.
