Fire Safety in the Design, Management and Use of Buildings: Code of Practice
Also Known As:
BS 9999:2017 is a British Standard that provides recommendations and guidance for fire safety in the design, management, and use of buildings. The standard aims to ensure reasonable standards of fire safety for all occupants and individuals in and around buildings. It covers the entire life cycle of a building, including the design process, ongoing management of fire safety, and alterations and extensions to existing buildings.
This standard is applicable to new buildings, as well as alterations, extensions, and changes of use for existing buildings. It can be used to assess existing buildings, although significant changes might be limited or impractical. The recommendations and guidance in BS 9999 are primarily focused on safeguarding lives but can also contribute to other fire safety objectives.
The revised edition of BS 9999 aligns with current practices, new technology, and other parts of the fire safety standards series. It introduces new features such as a flowchart for the design process, updated guidance on fire safety management, inclusion of watermist fire suppression systems, expanded guidance on voice alarms, and revisions to various recommendations for smoke and heat control, fire curtain barrier assemblies, mechanical ventilation systems, and more.
Those who would benefit from purchasing this standard include architects, fire safety engineers, fire risk assessors, building control professionals, installers of fire safety systems, those involved in certification and installation schemes, and individuals involved in emergency lighting.
