Safety of Machinery: Safety-Related Parts of Control Systems - General Principles for Design
Also Known As:
BS EN ISO 13849-1:2015 is a standard that provides guidance for the design and integration of safety-related parts of control systems (SRP/CS), including software design. This standard is applicable to machine manufacturers, users, health and safety bodies, trade unions, service providers, and organizations for people with special needs.
The main purpose of this standard is to prevent failure of safety functions in machinery. It outlines the characteristics and performance level required for carrying out safety functions applicable to SRP/CS, regardless of the type of technology and energy used. It applies to all types of machinery and provides specific requirements for SRP/CS using programmable electronic system(s).
In the latest update of the standard, some changes have been made. These include the deletion of a former table and the addition of a new sub-clause and annex. The definitions of terms such as hazardous situation and high demand or continuous mode have also been modified, and a new term and definition of proven in use has been added. These updates ensure that the standard remains relevant and up to date in the market.
