Standard EN SampleStandard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials
Also Known As:
ASTM E119-20 is a standard that provides test methods for evaluating the fire resistance of building construction materials and elements. The purpose of these test methods is to determine the duration for which building elements can contain a fire and retain their structural integrity under a predetermined test exposure. The test involves subjecting test specimens to a standard fire with specified temperatures over a specified time period, followed by the application of a standard fire hose stream. The results of these tests provide a relative measure of the fire-test-response of comparable building elements.
The standard includes provisions for measuring the transmission of heat and hot gases through walls, partitions, floors, and roofs. It also includes measurement of the load-carrying ability of loadbearing elements during the test exposure. However, the standard does not provide information on the performance of test specimens constructed with components or lengths other than those tested. It also does not evaluate the generation of smoke, toxic gases, or other products of combustion, the control of smoke or products of combustion through the test specimen, the behavior of joints between building elements, flame spread over the surface of test specimens, or the effect of conventional openings in the test specimen.
The scope of the standard includes assemblies of masonry units and composite assemblies of structural materials, such as loadbearing walls, partitions, columns, girders, beams, slabs, and composite slab and beam assemblies for floors and roofs. It is important to note that the classifications determined by these test methods register the performance of materials under specific fire-test conditions and should not be interpreted as determining suitability under other conditions or after fire exposure. The standard also emphasizes that it does not incorporate all factors required for a comprehensive fire hazard or fire risk assessment of materials, products, or assemblies under actual fire conditions.
