These structures are intended to provide safe access for personnel involved in operating, inspecting, maintaining, and servicing equipment or areas. The standard also covers movable platforms that can be adjusted or assembled on-site, as well as permanently installed roof access for equipment and roof inspection and maintenance purposes.
Additionally, the standard can be used as guidance for providing access to other structures such as machinery, towers, wind turbine towers, and water and sewerage facilities in the absence of a directly applicable standard.
